Requirements

What you need

The short answer: a reasonably current Windows PC. Everything else ships in the installer.

Windows 10, version 1809 or later (64-bit), including every version of Windows 11.

Nothing else

Self-contained installer

No .NET runtime to install, no Office, no drivers. Everything AKAMud needs is inside. Expect the standard Windows install prompt, nothing more.

Privacy

Nothing phoning home

AKAMud only ever contacts your game server. The one exception is Help ▸ Check for updates, and only when you click it.

First run

Windows says it "protected your PC"?

That's Windows SmartScreen being cautious about a free app from a small publisher: it appears for any download it hasn't seen many times before, not because anything is wrong. AKAMud's installer is unsigned, so the "unknown publisher" warning is expected.

  1. Click More info on the SmartScreen dialog.
  2. Click Run anyway.
Only do this for an installer you got from this page, or one whose SHA-256 matches the one published here. Every release ships with its checksum.

Chrome blocked the download itself?

Chrome sometimes flags a new release as an "uncommon" or "suspicious" download before many people have fetched it. Click the downloads icon (top right of Chrome), find the blocked item, then choose Keep from its menu (on some versions it's under chrome://downloads as "Keep dangerous file"). Then verify the checksum below if you want certainty - that check beats any browser heuristic.

If you received the installer second-hand (from a friend, a Discord upload, anywhere that isn't this site), check it before running. In PowerShell:

Get-FileHash .\AKAMud-Setup-*.exe -Algorithm SHA256

The hash it prints should match the SHA-256 shown in the download box above (also published as a .sha256 file next to each installer in /downloads/). If it doesn't match, don't run it; download a fresh copy from here instead.

Free to use, provided as-is

  • AKAMud is free for playing text MUDs: no charge, no time limit.
  • You may share the unmodified installer with other players (check the SHA-256 if you got it second-hand).
  • You may not modify, rebrand or sell AKAMud, or distribute a changed version of it.
  • It's provided "as is", without warranty of any kind.
